Thor – Review

Thor is a battle scene after battle scene coming of age story.  After Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth, is banished from his home, Asgard, for being an immature hothead he falls to Earth as a mortal.  He quickly befriends some Earthlings including Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman, and promptly becomes at odds with the government.  Back on Asgard, Thor’s younger brother Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, attempts to assure his place of power with subterfuge and manipulation.

The mortals of Thor; Portman, Stellan Skarsgård, Kat Dennings, and Clark Gregg provide a balance to the violence with well placed humor and insight.  Hemsworth as Thor plays the arrogant immortal excellently, but his growth beyond that felt forced Although Odin is believable as the all-father, Loki is less convincing as a supervillian. His intentions and motivations seem unclear, and he comes across more as a pouty little brother rather than Thor’s nemesis.  Hopefully he will be a more formidable foe in the upcoming Avengers film.

In the end, Thor is not breaking any new ground, but the battle scenes are superb, the vistas of Asgard are amazing and the humor is top notch.
