January – April Music Wrap Up 2011

You will be viewing a list of the music I have been listening to or want to listen to so far this year. I am not a music critic so I am usually not very critical 🙂 I am also giving you my opinion so no hard feelings if insult “your band”. Enjoy!

January

Cage The Elephant - Thank You, Happy Birthday

Cage The Elephant
Thank You, Happy Birthday

Genre(s): Garage Rock, Alternative Rock, Punk Blues
Review: I enjoyed their first album and this one was no different. They changed their style a bit, but I think it is a good thing. The shrieking of lead singer Matthew Shultz is fantastic. I have gotten some strange looks from listening to this album but fuck’em I like the trippy nature their very unique sound.

Stratovarius - Elysium

Stratovarius
Elysium

Genre(s): Power Metal, Progressive Metal
Comments: I have not heard this album yet but I have enjoyed older albums from this band so hopefully it will not disappoint.

Times of Grace - The Hymn Of A Broken Man

Times of Grace
The Hymn Of A Broken Man

Genre(s): Metalcore, Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, Post-Rock
Review: This was a pretty good album, what you would expect from Adam Dutkiewicz & Jesse Leach.

February

DevilDriver - Beast

DevilDriver
Beast

Genre(s): Groove Metal, Melodic Death Metal
Comments: I have not listened to this album fully yet, but from what I have heard so far they really put on their brutal shoes for this record. I also would like to point out that this is one of the few bands I like that primarily scream, I usually prefer a good mixture of scream and sing.

Evergrey - Glorious Collision

Evergrey
Glorious Collision

Genre: Progressive Metal
Review: I enjoyed the album, some really good songs. Evergrey never fails to disappoint. I just feel like I have been waiting for an album as good as Monday Morning Apocalypse and their last 2 releases have not resonated with me as much as that album.

March

Jag Panzer - The Scourge of the Light

Jag Panzer
The Scourge of the Light

Genre: Power Metal
Comments: I have listened to this album once and I always listen to an album about 5-6 times before I make a real judgement on it. Nothing stood out to me on the first pass, but we shall see.

Rise Against - Endgame

Rise Against
Endgame

Genre(s): Alternative Rock, Melodic Hardcore, Punk Rock
Review: This is one of my favorite albums so far this year, every song wonderfully crafted and performed. A bit less of Tim McIlrath’s trademark scream but I don’t think the album missed it. I have yet to be disappointed in a Rise Against record.

Saliva - Under Your Skin

Saliva
Under Your Skin

Genre(s): Hard Rock, Post-Grunge
Review: I really liked the album except for the continuing usage of songs like “Badass” & “Burn It Up”, they are reminiscent of “Click Click Boom” from the early Nu Metal days of the band. I like it when bands evolve and with the exception of the aforementioned songs (and a few songs on each of their other records) Saliva has really evolved over the years embracing the Post-Grunge style. Either way it is a solid album that I have listened to again and again.

Sum 41 - Screaming Bloody Murder

Sum 41
Screaming Bloody Murder

Genre(s): Alternative Rock, Punk Rock, Melodic Hardcore, Alternative Metal
Review: Welcome Sum 41 back to the fucking table! I loved this record and was so happy to see Sum 41 back to their wonderful selves. Another one of my favorite albums of the year so far.

Trust Company - Dreaming In Black and White

Trust Company
Dreaming In Black and White

Genre(s): Alternative Metal, Post-Grunge, Hard Rock
Comments: I almost forgot about this band and with 6 years in between their last album it is no wonder. I enjoyed their first 2 records and I hope to enjoy this one.

April

Foo Fighters - Wasting Light

Foo Fighters
Wasting Light

Genre(s): Alternative Rock, Post-Grunge, Hard Rock
Review: “These are my famous last words!!!” a great line to start off a truly excellent album. I thoroughly enjoy Dave Grohl’s scream throughout the album. They really brought a heavier nature to the album especially if you compare it to their previous album. There is not much else to say about this album except it is fantastic and should be listened to be all. I have been a longtime Foo Fighters fan and they have yet to disappoint me!

So you can get a feel from the list what my taste in music is, please let me know in the comments if I have missed a great album in these 4 months. I will be doing a review/comment of music I listen to every month so stay tuned for more.
